Pasadena Mayor, Victor M. Gordo

Born in Zacatecas, Mexico, Victor immigrated to the United States with his parents as a young child. The oldest of six, Victor grew up in Pasadena and is a proud product of the Pasadena Unified School District.

When Victor enrolled at Pasadena City College, he became the first person in his family to attend college, continuing his education at Azusa Pacific University, studying business management and finance. Shortly after his mother passed away, Victor was forced to postpone his college dreams to help raise his siblings. As his siblings got older, Victor was able to continue his formal education while still working full-time.

Victor worked as a Program Director for Pasadena’s Day One Community Partnership where he brought together over 100 agencies to create Youth Month, an effort which provided Pasadena young people with free daily activities during the month of August. He also worked closely with City staff and residents to rid neighborhoods of problematic bars and liquor stores. As a result of his efforts with Day One, Victor was asked to work with the Los Angeles County Children’s Planning Council to help develop a system of Service Area Planning Councils aimed at making Los Angeles County government more responsive to local needs, as well as more efficient and effective in delivering services to children, youth, and families.

Victor began his direct service to the City of Pasadena in 1997, when then–Vice Mayor Bill Crowfoot appointed him as the field representative for District 5. Pasadena’s District 5 is one of our City’s most ethnically and socially diverse districts.

Following Vice Mayor Crowfoot’s retirement from City service, Victor was elected to represent Pasadena’s District 5 on the Pasadena City Council in March, 2001. In 2009, he was selected by the Pasadena City Council to serve as its representative on the Rose Bowl Operating Company (RBOC) and was its longest-serving President/Chair, leading the Stadium’s successful renovation efforts. Victor has served on the Council’s Finance Committee and as Chair of the Economic Development and Technology Committee of the City Council.

Keynote Speaker, Steven Gaffney

I grew up as a scrawny, nerdy kid that didn’t have a lot of friends. I didn’t connect well with people and was frequently bullied throughout my younger life. I had learning disabilities due to hearing and sight problems that were later corrected, and received help from Easter Seals in order to catch up to the other children.

I credit my parents with teaching me how to problem solve so I wasn’t left behind.

My engineering father would break down a problem into complex steps, and my brilliant mother would patiently take those steps and simplify them for me.

From those experiences, I learned that step-by-step solutions can be used repeatedly, always produce the same result, and can be taught to others.

I clearly remember a time when I chose to use that engineering approach to solve human relations problems.

The processes and steps that I bring to an organization are the keys to high achievement with extreme speed.

It’s why I do what I do today – and have done so for over 25 years with a diverse group of clientele such as Lockheed Martin, Defense Logistics Agency, and Marriott.

Wednesday, January 31st - 11:30 - 1:00 PM
Keynote Speaker Ross Bernstein

In this keynote session Ross will focus on dozens of amazing leaders from the world of sports, and explain how they were able to create “buy-in” through some very unorthodox methods. Success in business today is all about trust, communication and building deeper relationships — and it’s no different in sports. Coaches have to motivate their players in order to not only win, but to keep their jobs — so they have a lot of different tools in their tool boxes. Ross learned that there is no right way to lead, so he will share many different philosophies that sales professionals and business leaders can use to develop better relationships in the workplace. At the core of his message is the simple fact that we like to do business with people who we trust, who we like, and who just “get it.” In an engaging, provocative, and visually entertaining style, Ross will use inspirational stories and poignant life lessons from the world of sports — as well as from some of the biggest brands in corporate America — to show attendees how to:

• Lead with integrity in order to achieve success
• Create buy-in to connect with millennials, boomers and challenging co-workers
• Generate momentum through leading by example and mentorship of others
• Create a winner’s mindset in order to stay self-motivated through good times and bad
