Verne O. Gehringer Award
An Award for Outstanding Contributions to Public Purchasing

In January 1975, the CAPPO Board established the Verne O. Gehringer Award in recognition of a truly exemplary CAPPO member, public servant, and champion of public purchasing - Verne O. Gehringer.  Verne was very involved in our association and served as its President in 1952. Verne was active in the public purchasing industry, and promoted continuous improvement in purchasing, setting the bar high for all of these characteristics by the way he worked within his own agency as well as the public purchasing arena. This award was established to recognize the example of Verne’s service, his efforts toward obtaining broader public recognition of CAPPO throughout the state, and most particularly, for how he encouraged and mentored people to seek positions in public procurement. 

CAPPO does not give this award routinely. The Verne O. Gehringer award has been presented only 14 times in its history, the most recent being 2024.

The Verne O. Gehringer Award is to be presented to an individual whose modest, unselfish, sincere, and persistent efforts for the advancement of public procurement, and whose able assistance and guidance to the membership in their endeavors eminently qualify the nominee for this award. The award is for outstanding contributions to CAPPO and to the public procurement profession as a whole, and is the highest recognition given by CAPPO.
