June 2020 President's Message -
President Derr 2020-2021

TEAM CAPPO,

As I sat down at my desk to begin writing this month’s article for the June CAPPO eNews letter, I began reflecting on the past three months of my presidency and what a wild and crazy ride it’s been. As we move forward in dealing with this unprecedented challenge, we as Procurement Professionals are facing, we are being asked to assist our agencies in identifying and pursuing creative and innovative solutions to an ever-changing environment. We are continually being challenged to find new and innovative ways to perform our daily jobs and meet or exceed our ongoing responsibilities to our customers. Whether you’re working through telecommuting or still working from your office we are having to become more creative than ever before in order to deliver quality services in a challenging time utilizing safe delivery methods.

Speaking of safe delivery methods, your CAPPO Board of Directors has been working diligently with the 2021 Conference Committee in preparing for the upcoming 2021 Conference in Monterey. As we continue to deal with COVID-19 and all the new Social Distancing protocols the committee and board have chosen to move forward with a hybrid approach to the 2021 Conference. You may be asking yourself right now what exactly will this hybrid structure look like? Well, that’s a very good question, and with your patience and indulgence the board will be releasing that information shortly. As a team we want to make sure that what we release as the new hybrid approach, is one that is well thought-out and planned. As a Team we are both excited and nervous at the same time about building and responding to this new opportunity and sharing with all of you as to what the hybrid program would both look and feel like. Keep your eyes peeled on future upcoming CAPPO eNews articles for news regarding the new conference structure and plans.

As our State and local government agencies begin to loosen and lift their stay-at-home orders, as Public Procurement Professionals we need to be prepared, the need and demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are going to be even more extreme than it was at the beginning of this epidemic. As the oldest Public Procurement organization, and as a group of public procurement professionals we need to be willing to share our resources and plans for reopening our agencies with one another. I want to personally “Thank” those that have taken the time in sharing their best practices which have been developed during this challenging time.

Remember, TEAM - Together Every Asset Matters “We are stronger together than we are alone”

Best regards,

Michael R. Derr, NSCS
