Fired up for real-life training
Tuesday, July 9, 2024

For the past 35 years, Louisville, Kentucky firefighters have honed their skills using a prefabricated fire tower. While the vertical tower provided valuable experience, it couldn’t provide authentic training for fires occurring in the shotgun and camelback houses found in the city’s older neighborhoods. Louisville Fire Department leaders wanted to build a more diverse training ground that could better simulate the types of structure fires they encounter every day. Using a Sourcewell cooperative contract with WHP Trainingtowers, firefighters designed and built the Louisville Fire Department Burn Building Training Center. This one-of-a-kind training facility can replicate nearly any residential or commercial fire, providing firefighters with hands-on training for real-life scenarios they can’t get anywhere else.
